Setting the mood for your wedding

In Malaysia where weddings can be elaborate affairs spanning several days, involving huge guest lists, and comprising more than one ceremony (e.g. akad nikah and persandingan for the Malay wedding), you can make yours truly outstanding and unforgettable with the right theme and décor. In fact, you can go with one theme for the whole wedding while working with different variations for the décor, or go ahead and have fun with difference themes and décor throughout your wedding! The most important things to remember, other than your budget, is to ensure that your theme or themes suit your personality and style, and that you work with a wedding planner or decorator whose style really appeals to you. When it comes to a style or theme for a wedding, there are basically four main types :

The Romantic
Think gardens, hills, beaches and the countryside., for example. The romantic wedding usually features lots of flowers with pretty details such as ribbons, and favourite colour schemes include white and pastels such as pink, blue, purple and green.

Keeping in mind the weather conditions in Malaysia, the comfort of your guests is an utmost priority. Plan accordingly to include mist fans, use tents that promote ventilation, or choose a location that gets enough breeze. Resorts located in the hills and forest reserves of Malaysia make interesting locations, especially those in Pahang.

The Unique
You’ve heard of couples getting married underwater, in a hot-air balloon, or while skydiving. If you prefer something less “adventurous”, how about a picnic wedding or a reception at a historical building? The natural atmosphere of these locations will help you decide on the décor of your weddings, and all you need is some imagination and creativity to make it unique. An example is Baba & Nonya theme in a historical Malacca building, where attire and furniture may be inspired by the colours, patterns and props that are exclusive to the culture.

The Flamboyant
Anything goes, and generally, in the most unusual ways. Your themes can be inspired by anything such as “goth”, sci-fi (science fiction), or your favourite movie! The trick is how you and your wedding decorator turn it into a setting that is appropriate for a wedding. Trendy nightclubs or restaurants can be interesting wedding venues if you are able to reserve the place exclusively for your wedding. Colour schemes can range from bright and funky to dark and chic, just as long as you have the right combinations for the right ambience.

The Classic
Elegance is key for this style that is great for just about any location you can think of – in a magnificent ballroom, cosy restaurant or at home. Decorate with beautiful floral designs and use classic, all-time favourite colour schemes using combinations of white, silver, ivory and gold. You can even throw in an extra colour such as pink, lavender, red or black (for dramatic effect!).
